But what does this look like in reality when someone builds it?

Not theory. Not fragments. All four Ghosts are working together. Let me show you by taking James Clear as an example.

James Clear: A Complete System

One of the most commercially successful authors of the 2020s. This wasn’t luck—it was architecture.

Vision Ghost: He claimed “Atomic Habits” territory. The idea that 1% improvements compound into remarkable results.

Not productivity. Not habits (too broad).

Atomic habits—the smallest unit of behavioral change.

That’s intellectual territory. Distinct. Defensible.

Voice Ghost: “You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

That’s his language. His lens. His cognitive operating system.

Now everyone uses it. That’s not plagiarism—that’s what happens when you build Voice properly. Your language becomes the language.

Vortex Ghost: He built all three layers:

1. Doors: 3-2-1 newsletter (three ideas, two quotes, one question)—simple, shareable, high-reach

2. Flywheel: Social media and Blog essays diving deeper into behavioral science

3. Library: Atomic Habits (the transformation asset) Books, Apps...

The newsletter opened the door. The flywheel pulled people deeper. The book delivered transformation.

“But I’m Not James Clear”

True.

But James Clear wasn’t James Clear either when he started building this system. I mean, he was, but no one knew him.

He was a baseball player turned photographer with a small blog.

Atomic Habits was published in 2018. Before that, almost nobody knew who he was.

But here’s what most people miss:

The newsletter came first. 2012.

Six years of systematic publishing before the book.

The book wasn’t the system. The book was the system's output.

But here's what gets missed:

They think, “Once I’m successful, I’ll start publishing.”

But that‘s Wrong.

The system creates success.

James Clear didn’t write a book and then build an audience.

He built an audience systematically, and the book became inevitable.

The Pattern

Look at anyone who’s built lasting authority through publishing:

Seth Godin. Vision (Permission Marketing). Voice (smallest viable audience). Vortex (daily blog → books → courses). Value (decades of inbound).

Andrew Chen. Vision (network effects). Voice (growth loops). Vortex (essays → newsletter → book). Value (a16z partner).

Nassim Taleb. Vision (Black Swan events, Antifragility). Voice (via negativa, skin in the game). Vortex (Twitter → books → Incerto). Value (global authority).

Same pattern.

Not fragments. A system.

All four Ghosts are amplifying each other.

Without all four:

You get traffic but no transformation. Depth but no discovery. Activity but no authority.

With all four:

You compound.

Yesterday, you faced the truth: You’re feeding the feed. Renting attention. Building nothing that compounds.

The vast majority of people can’t articulate what’s wrong, but they feel the identity conflict—the exhaustion, the diminishing returns, the sense that they’re running faster just to stay visible.

So they keep posting—not because it’s working, but because everyone tells them to. “Be consistent. Show up daily. Stay top of mind.”

The 4 Ghosts: Vision, Voice, Vortex, Value

1. Vision Ghost — What You Claim, Not What You Do

The mistake:

Describing what you do instead of claiming what you think.

“I help companies scale.” “I advise on leadership.”

That’s vendor positioning. You’re competing on deliverables, not worldview.

What Vision actually is:

Vision is the intellectual territory that only you can own. The identity you claim in the market’s mind.

What many people miss here:

Sharing opinions that everyone agrees with. That’s not Vision. That’s the consensus.

Real Vision creates productive tension—it makes smart people think differently. That‘s the difference. If your vision doesn‘t force change, it‘s not visionary.

2. Voice Ghost — How You See, Not How You Sound

The mistake:

Thinking of voice = personality or tone.

But Voice is cognitive. It’s how you see your domain differently.

Read your last 5 pieces. Do people say:

• “I already know that.”

• Or “I never thought of it that way”?

The first is surface. The second is Voice.

What many people miss here:

They describe surface observations. They don’t reveal the pattern beneath it.
And if they do, they fail to claim it through their own language.

Without Voice, people remember the idea. With it, they use your language to explain problems.

3. Vortex Ghost — Your Gravity System

The mistake:

Smart people make one of two errors:

1. They post shallow content forever (doors to nowhere)

2. They write deep essays nobody discovers (depth with no doors)

What Vortex actually is:

A three-layer system that pulls people from the “streets of feeds” into your intellectual library:

1. Doors — Shallow, high-reach content that opens awareness

2. Flywheel — Short-form thinking that pulls people deeper

3. Library — Long-form assets where transformation happens

People don’t start at depth. They start scrolling, pattern-matching, looking for signals.

Shallow content isn’t lazy—it’s architecture. It’s how you open doors.

What many people miss here:

They think depth and reach are opposites. They’re not.

Vortex turns reach into depth without burning you out.

4. Value Ghost — What Actually Moves the Business

The mistake:

You’re tracking vanity metrics.

Likes. Followers. Engagement rate.

You’re optimizing for applause, not outcomes.

What Value actually is:

The KPIs that prove your publishing moves the business:

Inbound inquiries. Faster sales cycles. Speaking invitations. Partnership offers. Owned subscribers(email list), book deals, and podcast invitations.

Not reactions. Results.

What many people miss here:

They celebrate activity instead of outcomes.

They mistake being busy for building equity.

Without Value metrics, you’re posting in the dark. With them, you know exactly what’s working.

Why the Average person has 1-2 Ghosts (At Best)

Here’s the pattern:

Some people have vision—but they can’t turn it into strategic positioning. They know what they believe, but can’t claim territory with it.

Some have a voice—but they’re borrowing other people’s frameworks instead of building their own lens.

Almost nobody has Vortex. They either post shallow forever or write deep essays nobody finds.

And nearly everyone tracks the wrong metrics. They know their engagement rate. They don’t know which pieces actually moved the business.

Most people have fragments of 1-2 Ghosts. Almost nobody has all four working together.

You can’t claim territory with just Vision. You can’t scale authority with just Voice. You can’t compound without Vortex. You can’t prove ROI without Value.

You need all four.

That’s the Identity Publishing System.

Hundreds of posts. Decent engagement. Growing followers.

Whether they’re posting themselves or have hired someone to do it for them, something feels off.

What’s actually happening:

They’re just feeding the feed. And the feed is always hungry.

It consumes your ideas, digests them in 24-48 hours, and demands always more. The algorithm rewards you for feeding it, punishes you when you stop.

Every post you publish gets eaten and disappears.

In other words: You’re renting attention. Not building equity.

Test this:

Look at your last 50 posts. Now answer:

• What intellectual territory have you claimed?

• What do people remember you for?

• If you stopped posting tomorrow, or if the platform shut down, what would remain?

The answer, almost always: nothing compounds beyond platform metrics.

They’ve been busy. (Or they’ve paid someone to be busy on their behalf)

But nothing remains.

The problem isn’t the quality of the content. It’s the system.

They’re optimizing for the platform’s priorities (engagement, time on platform, algorithmic distribution) rather than their own (authority, clients, intellectual property).

There’s a different model.

I call it Identity Publishing. Here is the difference:

Content creators make posts. Publishers build systems that compound.

Content creators feed the feed. Publishers claim territory.

Publishers don’t chase algorithms. They build intellectual architecture that compounds.
